The Aborigine Sam Kelly lives with his wife and niece on the farm of preacher Fred Smith in the Australian outback after the end of the First World War. But they get a neighbor in the form of war veteran Harry March, for whom the aborigines are no better than cattle. When Harry shoots Sam because he thinks he is hiding a fugitive, Sam kills him and flees with his wife.
