Luchino Visconti adapted Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa's novel and was awarded the Palme d'Or for it at the Cannes Film Festival. With the film, he created an epic that depicts the southern Italian sensitivities in the mid-19th century with carefully composed images.
