"Star Trek" takes place in an alternative timeline in the Federation universe. A Romulan mining ship from the future attacks the USS Kelvin about 20 years before the first flight of the first Enterprise. In the process, James T. Kirk's father is killed. The resulting events lead to the reunion of the Enterprise crew, who must stop the Romulans from destroying Earth.
