Paul Newman stars as talented pool player Eddie, who uses his talent in pool to take money out of people's pockets in bets. When he meets the supposedly best player, he wants to beat him, but loses because of his arrogance and his alcohol consumption. Thus completely broke, he meets Sarah and moves in with her. Obsessed with wanting to be the best, he takes up an offer from the manager Gordon.
