Because the high school band is missing a saxophonist, Lisa is allowed to play in it. Also in the band is Shauna, the adolescent daughter of Superintendent Chalmers. Although she is very unkind to Lisa, the girls become friends, as Lisa discovers that Shauna also secretly has a passion for music. Homer, meanwhile, finds out that father Chalmers brews his own beer.
