Adrian Monk was an investigator with the San Francisco police, but after a traumatic event he developed obsessive-compulsive disorder. Because of his extraordinary perceptive powers, however, he is reinstated as a police consultant when a woman is stabbed to death and shortly afterwards an assassination attempt is made on the mayoral candidate St. Claire.
