The film is about the sinking of the Kursk in 2000. The Russian nuclear submarine is taking part in an exercise in the Barents Sea, but a torpedo explodes too early and the submarine sinks to the bottom, severely damaged. Some of the crew survive and hope to be rescued, but the Russian navy is poorly equipped and does not want any help from abroad.
