On an August morning in 1959, a group of armed and masked men robbed a car belonging to the National Bank of Romania. They stole 1.6 million lei, a sum equivalent to 5,000 salaries at the time. A short time later, a group of Jewish intellectuals, all of whom had once held high party offices, were accused of carrying out the robbery of the money transport.
