The German Georg has fled from political persecution to France where he can be arrested at any time. By chance he gets hold of the visas of the dead writer Weidel, which would enable him to flee to escape to Mexico. But Weidel's wife finds him searching for her husband. Director Christian Petzold adapts the novel of the same name by Anna Seghers to the present.
