An elderly couple from the countryside decide to visit their grown-up children and their families in Tokyo. After the long train journey, they slowly realize that the eldest son, a doctor, and the eldest daughter, who runs a beauty salon, have little time for them. Only Noriko, the widow of the son who died in the Second World War, makes an effort to look after her in-laws.
