In 1755, the penniless Danish soldier Ludvig Kahlen wants permission from the royal court to cultivate inhospitable Jutland. So far, all such attempts have been unsuccessful, yet Ludvig is granted permission. However, the area in which he settles is claimed by the sadistic landowner Frederik De Schinkel. Thus Ludvig is not only fighting against nature, but also against his neighbor.
