Young Skeeter wants to become a writer in Mississippi in the early 1960s. Raised by a black nanny herself, she thinks nothing of the arrogance with which the other women treat their black maids. So she comes up with the idea of having the maids report on their lives in a book. But this is illegal, and so at first only Abileen is willing to do it.
