István Szabó (born in 1938 in Budapest, Hungary) is a Hungarian film director of Jewish descent. After achieving success in Hungary in the 1960s and 1970s with previously unconventional films, he succeeded in laying the foundation for foreign-financed films with the 1980 film "The Green Bird", starring Hannelore Elsner, which then made him world famous.
