Music teacher and pianist Joe lives for jazz and sees his big chance when he is asked to fill in for a gig at short notice. But before he does, he has an accident and his soul ends up in the "Great Before", where souls are prepared for their life on earth. His opportunity to return to earth is now chained to "Soul 22", who thinks nothing of earth.
