Monk has traveled to New York with Sharona, Captain Stottlemeyer and Lieutenant Disher because a criminal there is said to have information about the murder of Monk's wife. But while still in the hotel, they witness the murder of the Latvian ambassador. Monk is asked to help the New York police in exchange for access to the criminal.
