Ellie remembers her time at FEDRA boarding school in Boston: one night, her friend Riley, who has been missing for weeks, invades her room and tells her she has joined the armed resistance of the Fireflies. She takes Ellie across the city at night to an abandoned mall, where she shows her what life used to be like.
